LOS ANGELES — BreakAway is partnering on a multi-year deal to collect and analyze shooting biomechanics for players in Overtime Elite, the Atlanta-based basketball league that features elite high school aged players including top five NBA picks Amen and Ausar Thompson.

BreakAway’s Shooting Labs, the state-of-the-art biomechanics collections, measure every aspect of how well a player sprints, cuts, jumps, lands, handles the ball, and shoots in a variety of ways from all spots on the court.

The 3D skeletal tracking system creates a signature “fingerprint” that tells how well players meet the in-game demands of their position. The insights—which BreakAway captures with its proprietary system—give athletes a deep understanding of their strengths, how they can develop, and shooting-mechanic’s baselines in the event they need to return from injury.

“Overtime Elite is one of the top environments for developing skill and they spare no expense in giving resources to their players,” says BreakAway president and co-founder Steve Gera.  “Overtime Elite is proving that players no longer have to follow traditional routes to get to the NBA, and novel data is an essential way to highlight what you’re capable of doing as you progress to the highest levels of the game.”

Biomechanics reports are shared directly with players in the BreakAway app, which also gives athletes the ability to track their stats, training data, habits, and essential media files.

“Our partnership with BreakAway aligns perfectly with our philosophy of empowering athletes and putting their needs first,” says Markus Klusemann, Overtime Elite’s VP of Health, Performance and Development. “We want to be at the cutting-edge of athlete development at OTE, and that’s why we set out to build a program that gives athletes access to the best training, coaching and facilities. Putting performance data at the heart of development is one of the best ways to help athletes succeed.”

With this partnership BreakAway now has one of the largest databases of validated normative basketball shooting data in the world and is turning that data into coaching drills alongside OTE staff. Insights back to players and coaches include shot path, set point consistency, release angle, and sequencing models. As a part of this partnership the team at BreakAway and OTE are collaborating together on additional research into shooting mechanics.

“The best sports organizations aren’t only collecting performance data, they’re putting it directly into the hands of athletes and coaches,” Gera says. “Who could possibly understand the context better? Athletes are experts when it comes to understanding themselves. Overtime Elite understands this as well as any organization when it comes to developing world-class athletes.”
