XFL Partners With BreakAway on Data and Tech Initiatives
The XFL announced its data and technology partnership with BreakAway on June 16, a day before we joined the league on its six-city summer showcase tour to discover talent for its upcoming draft.
Here are the key highlights from the announcement:
Sportico broke the news on Thursday morning with a feature story, which can be read on the site (subscription required) or simulcast on Yahoo! (free to read).
SportTechie also covered the partnership with a news story, which can be read here (no subscription required, metered paywall).
This short video features a snapshot of the BreakAway athlete app and what our biomechanics videos look like. All data, video and reports get uploaded into the app.
The XFL’s press release described BreakAway as a “a high-performance sports company that leverages cutting-edge technology and data insights to help athletes and coaches optimize performance, training, recovery and player health.” It also described us as “an extension of the XFL’s enterprise technology team” that will help “formulate and build a comprehensive, next-generation player data strategy.”
Sportico wrote: ”As sports analytics grow more advanced and wearable devices become more common, discussion continues to build around how much of those rights should belong to athletes versus management and third-party companies. The XFL is tackling this debate by allowing its players to own their performance and biomechanics data. The spring football league, which plans to relaunch in February 2023, is doing this through a new season-long partnership with BreakAway Data, a sports analytics company.
”The rebooting league looks to empower athletes with a different approach to player development by leveraging BreakAway’s various products, such as biomechanics assessments and management systems, which will capture in-game statistics, training and personal fitness data. XFL players will have full access to their performance-related data insights through BreakAway’s mobile app. They will retain and own the rights in perpetuity, regardless of contract status or even if they change leagues, while the XFL will also keep a copy in its in-house scouting database.
“ ‘I’ve never seen anything like this, and I’ve been in pro football for a long time,’ XFL president and former Buffalo Bills CEO Russ Brandon said. ‘It’s an innovative way for the athlete to get a 360-degree view of themselves and where they can improve.‘ ”
SportTechie wrote: The XFL has partnered with BreakAway Data to oversee the collection and management of its player performance data. BreakAway Data, a spinoff of the Gains Group sports innovation consultancy, will advise the XFL on overall strategy as well as the selection of other football technology vendors. XFL players will have access to BreakAway’s athlete data mobile app. The league and teams will use the startup’s athlete management system, called Stacks, as well as its biomechanics analysis tool, Field Labs.
The entire press release can be read on the XFL’s newsroom site and downloaded at the bottom of this page if you keep scrolling.
